Tuna Fishing Trip June 2021

18 brave men & women boarded the Pacific Voyage from Seaforth Landing, San Diego for a high sea fishing adventure south of the border. We returned with many Bluefin Tuna & Yellowtail. All good eating. The largest fish caught was 140+ lbs and took well over an hour to land, then 3 deck hands to lift into the boat. Fun trip! Time well spent.

Thanks to John of BajaFishingTackle.com for the prize reels!
Biggest Bluefin tuna estimated at 140 lbs or more

Fishing Trip Sept 2018

Sept 30th; club 1 day fishing trip, We left the San Pedro harbor well before first light. Caught some tuna, various other fish and many guys limited out on Whitefish over the rocks. Fun time.

My only 2 complaints about the Pescador (San Pedro) are 1) that the toilet drains directly to the sea. So occasionally there was crappy TP drifting around in the clear water where we were fishing. Bleh. I hear they are going to be doing some renovations…  And 2) the crew was often busy fishing for themselves, leaving them unable to help the customers.

By contrast the Pacific Voyager crew (San Diego) was always attentive to the customers, ready & offering help before you could ask. Class act.

August Tuna Trip

RRGC members Kenny, FogBank, & SpeakEasy spent August 22, 23, & 24, 2018 onboard the Pacific Voyager in pursuit of fishing adventure.

The trip took us south out of San Diego into international waters about 20-30 miles off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico. Adventure was found, fish were caught. Weather was about perfect, warm with a light breeze. Food onboard was very good and beers were cheap. When the action hit it was hard & fast, so we were lucky to get any photos at all. There were 16 fishermen onboard this 65 foot boat, so we had  plenty of room. The captain was good about finding fish, so we didn’t waste much time soaking bait. The bite was ON, or we moved out.

Kenny caught the 1st Yellow Fin Tuna
Everybody keeps moving the to left, to follow their line as it drifts. Try not to get tangled.

Action gets busy! Will sort catch into bags & chiller a little bit later when the bite slows.
David with a Dorado. Also called Mahi Mahi
SpeakEasy with SkipJack Tuna, 10-12 pounds each. Also called Striped Tuna

SkipJack Tuna is what you usually get in a can of tuna (unless it is albacore tuna). Very tasty when fresh, I’m told it does not store well frozen. Enjoy it fresh, share with friends until gone then plan the next trip.

SkipJack Tuna Recipe: Try encrusting with seasonings & sear on dry cast iron over medium high heat, about 90 seconds per side, leaving the center 1/3 rare. Flip once if even thickness. If filet is irregularly thick and triangular, sear all 3 sides.  Serve immediately to friends & family.
